Small Biz Tech Buzz | A technology and business newsletter for small business owners and managers

Hello! And welcome to the most recent edition of Terrapin Networks’ Small Biz Tech Buzz!

Are you keeping up with the Olympics? Alongside cheering on Olympians from Michigan (including this ski pole company from Cheboygan!), I’m always amazed at the quality, talent, and drive of the athletes. These are people who have worked tirelessly, with a singular goal in mind, for a long time- in some cases, for most of their lives.

Kinda reminds you of small businesses owners, doesn’t it? We’re the ‘Olympians’ of our local economy! Single-minded, focused, and hard-working. Our goals are important, and our drive is second to none. Pretty impressive on all counts.

From all of us here at Terrapin Networks, we’re cheering you on-

Tim Gillen CNE, MCP
Small Business Tech Specialist
Founder and President, Terrapin Networks

If you’re new to me, or to my company Terrapin Networks, here’s a little about us: We’re a small IT firm located in Traverse City, Michigan, and we cater exclusively to small businesses and companies with 1-15 computer users. We have a unique perspective on small business and the utilization of technology; with over 25 years experience in the tech field and as small business owners that go back over 40 years in Northern Michigan.
We’re the right fit for those of you who feel too small for the larger IT managed service providers that ignore you for the ‘big dog’ companies, companies who at the same time feel too big for small, one-man-shop IT support providers that likely don’t ‘get’ what your business is working to accomplish. You can read more about us, who we are, and our back story here.

Small Biz Tech Buzz | A technology and business newsletter for small business owners and managers

Hello! And welcome to the first edition of Terrapin Networks’ Small Biz Tech Buzz in the new year!

Despite the rain we’ve had, it’s good to be in a new year. I know January can sometimes feel cold and dreary up here in the great white north, but I always like to think of it as a fresh start. I’m ready to work towards our company’s goals and continue to help our customers reach their bottom line, fulfill their promises to their own customers, and keep utilizing technology to help get them there. What about you?

Are you on Facebook? We’ve been sharing a lot over there in the last few months, and we’re having fun with the customers and ‘fans’ who engage with our posts! We’ve been sharing mostly a mix of funny small business memes (since we definitely get the struggles and humorous side of owning a small business), technology resources, and helpful information to get you to be the best small business owner or manager you possibly could be. If you’re not following us yet, you should be!

It’s a good way to start the year, isn’t it? Constantly improving on being the best version of small business owners and operators that we possibly could be, and enjoying it every step of the way.

From all of us here at Terrapin, we hope you’ve had a great start to 2018, and we’re ready to tackle the next 12 months right alongside you.

Small Biz Tech Buzz, Issue #103, October 27, 2017

Hello! And welcome to the current volume of the Small Biz Tech Buzz.

Each issue is short, to the point, and easy to digest. Have a look, save a link here or there, and get back to your busy day!

Here’s today’s tech tip to take you into the weekend, and it’s especially for those of us who just upgraded to the shiny new iPhone 7.

The iPhone 7 doesn’t have an actual button for the Home button. Instead, the ‘home’ button is a sensor on the home screen that runs via what Apple calls a “Taptic Engine”. This means that the sensor “blends” into the home screen, but it works like the button on an Apple Watch; that is to say, it feels just like a button when you press it.

Did you know you can subtly change that artificial click feeling? Here’s how: Go to Settings >General >Home Button. You’ll see 3 options of click feel to test out. Pick the one that feels right, and then the Done option in the top right-hand corner.

That’s it!

I share a new, helpful tip in each and every issue of the Small Biz Tech Buzz. Got a tech question you’d like me to answer in this newsletter? Send it along! You can reach me via the ‘Contact’ tab at the top of the screen.

With that, enjoy the rest of the interesting links I’ve gathered for you here today. Enjoy your weekend!

To your continued success,

If you’re new to me, or to my company Terrapin Networks: We’re a ‘boutique’ tech services firm that serves only small companies. While most IT support firms are after the larger side of ‘small business’, we only team up with companies with 1-15 computer users. It’s our specialty, and we’ve put some great tech services and products in place that really help smaller companies use technology to the fullest while protecting and optimizing their tech systems.

We’ve been at this since 1990 (a lifetime ago in the world of technology!) when I saw in our own small business how the tech types of the day didn’t seem to get what we’re up against in running a small company. We set out to fill that need, and 27 years later we’re still the dependable and trusted resource for small companies all over our wonderful Northern Michigan.

In keeping with this Small Biz Tech Buzz theme, I’ve put together a short report on 6 Don’ts and a Do You Should Consider When Seeking Tech Services For Your Small Business.  Check it out here. Small business owners tell us it’s pretty handy.

And if you ever have any questions regarding technology, I’m always available for a chat.

I hope you enjoy the selection I’ve articles I’ve put together for you today. If you’d like to see more or to join the conversation, you can follow along with Terrapin Networks on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.
