[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”2426″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Hello, and happy ‘Pi Day’! (The date is 3/14… get it? 🙂) Welcome to the most recent edition of Terrapin Networks’ Small Biz Tech Buzz!
Today I want to touch on some of the things the “experts” don’t often tell you; but that you should make sure you’re doing anyway.
6 Myths About Cloud-Based Computing (That the Experts Aren’t Being Clear Enough About)
- You must have everything for your small business located in the cloud. Not true; many small businesses work best with a combination of cloud and local (on-premise) systems.
- As long as your password is secure, your files are safe. Not true; good passwords help, yes, but a strong firewall, anti-spam measures, good backup and a consistent security system are all needed as well.
- Once you’ve set up your cloud-based network, you’re good to go. Not true; cloud-based networks need supervision in order to remain secure and, in some cases, compliant. If you’re not monitoring internally, make sure your outsourced provider has a system in place.
- Cloud computing is nothing but a fad. Once again, not true. Research firm Gartner predicts that companies will spend $788 billion on public cloud services in the next four years. It’s here to stay because there is real value to any business, including small business.
- The cloud is not reliable. Not true; Like any network, a cloud system requires a strong and secure backup in place. This increases reliability and almost guarantees near-perfect uptime.
- The cloud is an actual cloud. Well, no. The term “the cloud” simply refers to the ability to access your information from wherever you are. If you’ve ever replied to an email from your phone, then opened that same email on your desktop at work, and then opened it again on your laptop at home… you’ve accessed the cloud. Your data, your information, on any compatible device.
Curious how using the cloud could benefit your small office? Let’s chat! We offer many cloud-based services to meet some very specific small business needs. I’d be happy to discuss how they could potentially benefit your company.
From all of us here at Terrapin Networks, we’ll see you from the cloud in our next newsletter-

Small Office Tech Specialist
Founder and President, Terrapin Networks
If you’re new to me, or to my company Terrapin Networks, here’s a little about us: Based in Traverse City, Michigan, we provide small office tech solutions exclusively for small companies with 1-15 computer users. We have a unique perspective on small business and the utilization of technology; with some 25 years’ experience in the tech field and small business owners that go back over 40 years in Northern Michigan.
Oftentimes a smaller company can feel underappreciated and neglected by the ‘larger’ IT support firms. These firm’s model is based on getting “seats”, so they’d much rather support a single business with 50 users than 5 different companies with 10 users each. We turn that upside down – we’re all about the small office with 4, or 8, or 12 computer users. We’ve made it a real niche, and in the “outsourced tech services” world it is quite unusual.
